Sigh.  I give up.

It looks like the Imaging for Windows product that Microsoft
is giving away is STILL producing those bogus JPEG-in-TIFF files.  I tried
to convince them to change it a while back when it was still called the Wang
Imaging for Windows product, but I guess they didn't listen.   That
is probably why we've had two such inquiries lately from different
parts of the world.  (See my recent response to "Old Style JPEG" on
this list ).

Again, for anyone wishing to know why the original spec is a
hideously bad design, read the TIFF technical note by Tom Lane:

Oh, well, I'm going to put on some nice classical guitar music and just
get over this whole thing.  Its too late, and life is simply too short.
