Thanks for the info on this. I'm trying this idea of not uncompressing the data. It seems to work but the image is inverted.

What is inverted? Upside-down? Or black and white becoming white and black?

Is there some property that you know of to set in the PDF for showing that this field is reversed?

Assuming that it is a black and white issue as you seem to indicate, take a close look at the PhotometricInterpretation tag. There is often confusion between MinIsWhite and MinIsBlack on the TIFF side. As to the PDF side... I don't know from the top of my head, but I seem to remember that aside from the images (as stored in XObject objects?), the surrounding pseudo-postscript (inside the page object contents streams?) can influence the matter, and maybe swap black and white?
