I'm pretty sure the image on the bugzilla entry pointed to is ITULAB, not ICC or CIE Lab. The difference in white would be quite noticable, and the image has a white background, so there can be no mistake. If you meant to say you recomend using ICCLAB or CIELAB instead of ITULAB, I'll have to agree, providing that's an option for the writer. (Writers that write ITULAB, usually do so because they get the stream from a fax machine and don't want to decompress/recompress, so there's not much option there.)
