I just tried using GraphicsMagic. What a nice program! Glad to have found it.

'gm identify' reports:

BIGTIFF 42002x41984+0+0 DirectClass 16-bit 4.0Gi 0.000u 0m:0.000000s

When I try to open it using gm convert <myfile>, after several seconds I see:

gm convert: Corrupted LZW table at scanline 40704. (LZWDecode)

So that gives me a clue at least! I'm entirely unsure how to proceed though. I don't have any reason to believe my source data is corrupted.
