I think something went wrong in ./configure, causing the .so suffix not to be appended.

It has already been described that the existing libtiff release uses conflicting/inconsistent tool versions which cause the .so suffix to be dropped on some systems. It is a broken release. There are other bugs which make the latest libtiff release unusable (for my purposes) so hopefully there will be a new libtiff release soon. The CVS version has fixed some major bugs related to tags.
