I don't quite understand the situation.  You were installing it
without source code?  The source is available at
ftp://ftp.sgi.com/sgi/fax/contrib/viewfax/viewfax-2.3.tar.gz

Unpack it with

% cd /usr/local/src   # for instance
% zcat viewfax-2.3.tar.gz | tar xf -

and read the README file.
