That, and the fact that, to the best of my knowledge, no such error has
been reported sofar, seems to point in the same direction. Possible, the
problem is not related to LibTiff. It may be just one of those very hard
bugs that comes from improper memory usage in totally unrelated code, or
something.

In any case, I don't think we have a good angle here to investigate it.
Personally, I certainly have no access to a machine that shows this
behaviour. If you have, I'm wondering, do you have a proper IDE or
otherwise support for tracing through the code on such a machine?
Actually seeing where the wrong samples per pixel value comes from in
LibTiff, finding the exact place where trouble begins this way, may or
may not shed some light on this. If not, I suggest you just leave it be
for now. That's what I'd do if there's no firm deadline on solving this,
as I'm willing to bet the problem mysteriously disappears when you
solved some other bugs.
