Is this behavior (have YCbCr image, use TIFFRGBAImage interface you even will get an image properly converted into RGB colour space) also applicable for other types of TIFF files (bilevel, grayscale, palette, etc)?

Yes, it will work for most common types of images (bilevel, 8-bit grayscale, 2-,4-,8-bit colormapped images, YCbCr and Lab). 16-bit grayscale will work too, but not perfect due to the simple scaling technique. Other data types will not work with this interface.
