Fax encoding is broken in libtiff 3.6.1. You need more recent code, 3.7.0alpha, or, better, current CVS snapshot.

umm. what exactly is the problem with the fax encoding in 3.6.1 (and does it apply to 3.5.7 as well)?

for compatibility reasons, i can't use 3.6 or 3.7, but if something is seriously wrong with 3.5.7, i'll need to fix it.
