This is an interesting question.  I know Solaris supports versioned
symbols.  There was an excellent USENIX article on this.  I cannot
remember reference off the top of my head.  This article covered the
topic at hand for Solaris and Linux.  What other OSes support symbol
versioning, and are there libtool/autoconf macros for doign the right
thing at link time?
