PNG list style voting, is like this:

• long discussion
• someone builds the final proposal as derived from the discussion
• people have two weeks to vote. if there's still ongoing discussion, and proposal needs changing to reflect that, two weeks clock is reset
• 'respected long-time member' votes only are count, 'newbie/casual/outsider/kiddy' votes are not really regarded, and may be count in some of the lists, but are not actually attributed any real weight

The PNG approach is ponderous and will make your eyes roll back into your head because it is so boring yet annoying. Most mailing list members would unsubscribe. Since voting kicked back up again on the PNG list, I have since unsubscribed.

I recommend that we use the IETF of approach of developing a working specification and a couple of interoperable implementations written to that specification to prove that it is sound. Libtiff 4.X can be one of those implementations. Maybe Adobe can provide the other.

PNG went for ISO standard status. I don't see that as a necessity for BigTIFF, particularly since the existing TIFF specification is a vendor specification.
