In the TIFF specifications 6 page 23 I see that for Palette Color images the BitsPerSample tag should be 4 or 8, but not 16. But it is allowed by libtifff. Are 16 bit images with colormap "standards"? (note that in TIFF spec. RGB images should be only 8bits I believe (page 24)).
Yes, but that's inside part 1 'baseline TIFF'. I believe the specification doesn't impose any rigid bitdepth limit, even if only some common bitdepths are to be considered 'baseline'.
