I have gotten access to a FreeBSD system on sourceforge, and tested your problem. It seems that the GNU tool chain is now the default (at least for the linker) on FreeBSD. I have added a GNULDdso target in libtiff/Makefile.in and updated configure to use that on FreeBSD (as well as Linux). I would appreciate it if you could check out the current version from CVS and verify that everything configures, builds and installs cleanly for you.

It compiles and installs cleanly for me now.
