Hmmm, I was looking at the "and encoded in 16 bits as signed integers range [-32768,32767]" and "and encoded in 16 bits as unsigned integers range [0,65535]" comments.

If you meant those ranges to refer to the base encoding (signed or unsigned 16 bit integers) then they are correct, but very misleading. Several people I was with read that as being intended to describe the range of permissible a* or b* values, which it does not do.

So probably just a difference between the writer's intent and the readers assumptions, but one well worth clearing up.
