Is this one of the strange systems which uses the EBCDIC character set (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebcdic), or does it use ASCII? Are you able to provide a sample of one of the problematic input TIFFs? Have you tested on another type of system to see if the issue occurs there as well?
