Hi Jacques,
there is a known problem in tif_fax3; it uses uint16.
In an email to this list in the past there was a fix for it, but 
I have not found it jet.

But - how Daniel said - you will not be happy with that image.
That is a case for tiled images.

We have a viewer in our product which is tested with 150k * 250k pixels
(as tiled and with an overview addressed with tag 330).
But it is not a stand alone program ...
For future I am working at a libtiff and a pure JAVA based 
stand alone viewer which should handle such images ( if tiled ). 
Future ...
