Why don't we just rename libtiff 4.0.1 to libtiff 5? :) I say this half-jokingly but I personally wouldn't mind just bumping up the libtiff version so that it will always match the so version from now on to simplify things.

There should be no expectation of the software's version and the soname matching. It's quite possible that tiff 5.x and tiff 6.x could all still have libtiff.so.5. For a good explanation of all this, check out the libtool documentation.
