I have tested a SPARC 64-bit build with thandle_t typedeffed to both 'void *' and 'unsigned long'. Both work but I recommend using 'void *' in order to avoid an unnecessary API change. There are a number of warnings while compiling libtiff due to type conversions to types smaller than the original type.
