I built packages today for Debian that include LZW support. In
addition to copying tif_lzw.c from the LZW compression kit, I also
removed the statement in all the help messages that says:

"(no longer supported by default due to Unisys patent enforcement)"

Since this is really easy to forget, I thought I'd post a little
friendly reminder that that step would be part of reactivating LZW
support.

We finally came to a resolution in debian about what to do about the
ABI change. The resolution was to release libtiff version 3.6.1 as
libtiff.so.4.0.0. I felt confident in this based on past discussions
that the soname in the next release (whether that ends up being 3.7.0
or something else) will be based on libtool's standard approach for
shared library versioning and will skip a few numbers.

How is that going, by the way? Are you looking for a volunteer to fix
the code with respect to library versioning? I was going to check in
CVS before asking, but I can't currently connect to the CVS
repository.
