Jim,

I believe Joris prepared his sample files with custom code of his own.
We do intend to implement bigtiff support in libtiff, but it is awaiting
a settling down of existing libtiff work - perhaps soon after the 3.7.1
release.  I would add that implementing bigtiff inlibtiff it isn't a job that 
is efficiently shared amoung several developers.  This is the reason,
I haven't delved in myself since I can't really commit the time to do 
a good implementation of it myself.  I prefer to wait for Andrey even
though the wait is painful. :-)  I have been wanting BigTIFF for
quite a few years.
