In a service-bureau environment, I've scanned over a thousand grayscale
scans into one multi-page TIFF file.  The filesize there was about 600 MB as
I recall.

I don't know if there are theoretical limits w.r.t. the TIFF spec.   There
used to be the 2GB filesize limit due to the OS (FAT16), but with FAT32 &
NTFS, those limits are gone as well.
