Hi Joris,

you remember our conversation around the 19 May.

Please publish the "known unknown" tags on your web-site. This perhaps will enforce Microsoft to give an official comment to the actual meaning and will enthuse other developers, to include support for this tags in their programs.

Regards

Ulf

Joris,

I think brief "known unknown" entries would be useful if it is practical for you to maintain such.

Ulf,

Yes, I thought they look familiar... To be quite honest, I had forgotten all about them. I imagine, but I'm not even sure I remember correctly, that I was

still right in the middle of it and unable to take them on at the time. I have

failed to remember them when I did have the opportunity to consider them.

I hope I've answered your question in two mails I've written few minutes ago,

though. First was on-list, saying why I don't think it's the right thing to do

to include them in the tag directory the usual way. But shortly after I had sent

that mail, I realized though there might be another, better approach to publish

the tags, and I've asked for your and Frank's opinion in a second mail, private

this time.

I hope you've received all of that, but, honestly, these days, I'm starting to

have serieus doubts about the reliability of not just my memory, but also e-mail. Let me know if you don't receive the two e-mails I referred to above.

Joris

Frank, Ulf,

I wrote:

I was at the time mainly considering an individual tag page for each 'known unknown'. But thinking of it further, I might of course add only a single-page subsection to http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/tifftags.html, with a list of 'known unknown' tags. Such a page would be similar in content and hiërarchy to e.g. the http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/tifftags/baseline.html section, except that it would not link on to individual tag pages because there are none. The essential info then, of such a page, is that these tags are 'known unknown', i.e. at a certain point investigation has been done and nothing much came up. It can also be a reminder to people that own the tags, of course.

Plus, I'd make them show up in the search results. So if you would query http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/tifftags/search.html for say '4000', you'd get a report saying that it's a 'known unknown' with something like the additional line stating that it's an MS fax tag and maybe that it's been 'spotted' with a single particular datatype only sofar or whatever good use that the short description line can serve.

Assuming it's all feasable, do you feel such information is even useful?

Joris
