I suspect the main reason for lack of response, is that none of us have very meaningfull answers for your NULL return question. We are not aware of any current problems in this regard. So, without further information, we can only assume the NULL response is proper. This might be because you pass an invalid filename, or whatever.

Try other filenames, try opening for reading instead of writing. If that still doesn't work, try properly hooking into the error mechanism, and see what error is reported.
