It looks like this topic fell by the way without much of a resolution. Unfortunately, it's rather important to me; so I'm going to try to revive it :)

Are there any plans to do either of the options listed below (or to do something else that would allow reading and enumeration of non-image private subdirs )?

I saw myself mentioned below in the forwarded email. I am no EXIF or IFD expert (yet) but am interested in supporting EXIF in libtiff so that it can be used by GraphicsMagick (or any other software). If there is code you can donate, or experience that you can offer, I am certainly interested in hearing about it. My obligations keep me stretched pretty thin so it is not yet clear when I can do the work.

I was just wondering if this stuff is on anyone's ToDo list or not. If not, i'll have to find some other way to handle this stuff outside of LibTiff proper; i'd offer to do the LibTiff modifications myself but i'm just not familiar enough with the LibTiff tag handling internals to commit to it.

I think that the pdsdirread.c can be moved to the core at some point. And it is very easy to add this item to the developers' TODO: you should just create appropriate Bugzilla report ;-)
