it matters very much which software has written those old-style JPEG TIFFs, because it's not possible to implement the original JPEG-in-TIFF specification, only to misimplement it, and therefore every TIFF-writing program does it its own, slightly different way.

This is also why the TIFF library does not support this old-style JPEG compression at the moment, only the new, better style.

I think your best bet is to find a utility that *can* read your old-style JPEG-in-TIFFs and convert them to another TIFF compression method, like LZW. Maybe your scanning software comes with something.
