I'd suggest to follow official installation procedure. Platform SDK is installed under its own location and it's possible to configure environment/Visual C++ to use it without moving any files. Here is a page where you can find instructions how to build GDAL using Visual C++ Express Edition. In fact, these are general purpose guidelines: http://mateusz.loskot.net/2006/05/13/building-gdal-and-geos-with-vc-2005-express-edition/ I hope it helps.
