It is still not clear for me what do you (and others) mean as ASCII tags? Completely serialized metadata (including numerics and strings)? I should note that things like these bring up many problems with i18n/l10n: decimal delimiters, encodings etc. I think that all numerics should be stored in binary form and UCS-2 encoding may be used for strings.
