I forgot to CC the mailing list on my initial reply.. Appears to have
been already solved.

I've tried this on two machines, the first is a 32bit Fedora 5 system
(libtiff-3.8.2-1.fc5.i386)
LIBTIFF, Version 3.8.2
The second is a 64 bit machine running Kubuntu 8.04
(libtiff4_3.8.2-7ubuntu3.6_amd64.deb, tifftools-3.8.2-7ubuntu3.6_amd64.deb)
LIBTIFF, Version 3.8.2

... I downloaded and built 4.0beta6 and it worked, so I tried the same
with the last stable release (3.9.4) and it worked too. Yeah!
Looked through ChangeLog, and changes dated 2007-02-22 may have
addressed this issue -- can't tell as Bugzilla's down, but this may have
been bug 890.
