I am trying to build libtiff 3.4 on an RS6000 AIX v. 4.2 box.  My compiler
is gcc verion 2.7.2.  I run configure and I get stuff like the following:

% make
        /tools/gcc/bin/gcc -c -g -O -I. -I../libtiff   ../libtiff/tif_aux.c
Assembler:
/tmp/ccq.pnya.s: line 299: 1252-149 Instruction sle is not implemented in
the current assembly mode COM.
/tmp/ccq.pnya.s: line 439: 1252-149 Instruction sle is not implemented in
the current assembly mode COM.


I also get lots of link errors for the tools like:

        /tools/gcc/bin/gcc -o gif2tiff -g -O -I. -I../tools -I../libtiff
gif2tiff.o ../libtiff/libtiff.a    -lm
ld: 0711-224 WARNING: Duplicate symbol: convert
ld: 0711-224 WARNING: Duplicate symbol: checksignature
ld: 0711-224 WARNING: Duplicate symbol: readscreen
...

All this worked just fine with AIX 3.2.  What gives?
