This is part of NEWS for autoconf 2.62:

** AC_C_BIGENDIAN now supports universal binaries a la Mac OS X.

There is this in ChangeLog:

         * NEWS: AC_C_BIGENDIAN now supports universal binaries a la Mac OS X.
         * doc/autoconf.texi (C Compiler): Document this.  There is a new
         extra argument ACTION-IF-UNIVERSAL.

It seems that the proper solution is then to update to autoconf 2.62 
and implement the extra ACTION-IF-UNIVERSAL argument to the 
AC_C_BIGENDIAN macro (if necessary).
