How did we actually arrive at the subject? Was I drifting off-topic, or did the original question include this case? If the latter is the case, I think we all agree best is to avoid writing such stuff, even if it could perhaps be possible in TIFF depending on your take on the Indexed tag, and it certainly is possible in PNG.
