Thread2005.02.22 03:08 ""half" samples in TIFF?", by Bob FriesenhahnHas anyone tried using TIFF files containing 16-bit floating point values in "half" format as used by OpenEXR (http://www.openexr.com/) and supported by the latest OpenGL and some Nvidia graphics adaptors? This is not supported by the TIFF specification, but it seems quite feasable to use anyway. See http://oss.sgi.com/projects/ogl-sample/registry/ARB/half_float_pixel.txt for a short description of "half". Also see "http://www.openexr.com/details.html#halftype". By transferring certain EXR parameters to TIFF tags, many of the EXR format benefits could be realized without needing an entirely new format and new library.
