You make a very good point. That actual progress on libtiff is pretty slow compared to the things I (we) moot doing. Furthermore, that compared to new compression schemes BigTIFF is far more important. It is certainly important to my community (geospatial data) where folks almost routinely want to work with many GB files.

I do sort of regret bringing up the whole "additional compression types" thread. Especially since once I think about actually implementing new ones I remember that implementing new compression formats in libtiff is still fairly messy. Well, at the very least lost of the existing modules are pretty messy.
