I'll definitely check out GDAL; that looks to be exactly what I was looking for.

Olivier: we can't really control the files that we're sent; luckily they are the exception rather than the rule, so in a lambda execution environment my quick thumb in the error guess is that with 512MB of ephemeral storage we'd be able to support splitting files of 1/2 of that (assuming the original + all the split files = 2x the original files).
