Ah yes, that would explain some of the problems I am having. I believe that PhotoShop (and now the gimp) do not support other color spaces. I get "Unknown photmetric interpretation num: 6" errors messages. The files that casue this ar YCbCr files. I am going to try the xtiff viwer tht comes with libtiff and see if I have any joy there.

Modern versions of Photoshop (4.0 and later, possibly 3.0 and later, but I wasn't using it then) support colorspaces besides RGB and grayscale. In particular, Photoshop 5.5 supports bilevel, grayscale, indexed color, RGB color, CMYK color, L*a*b color, and generic multichannel color images.
