Being dense at this end - couldn't make sense of the gm help to do what you suggest.

Please could you suggest a suitable command line to check the file?

It would be as simple as

   gm conert -verbose infile.tiff outfile.tiff

or

   gm convert -verbose infile.tiff +adjoin "outfile-%d.jpg"

and then check the JPEG file (outfile-0.jpg and outfile-1.jpg) in any viewer you prefer (or you could write another TIFF if you like). Normally an error message would be produced if there is a problem reading infile.tiff.
