Libtiff will scan each Image File Directory for the offsets to the next image file directory (next tiff image).

Our experience with the speed is pretty good. We have checked it on a 620MB multipage TIFF image from a CD Rom with gives us nearly 74 thousand images. Our imaging control opens the file (and scans through the directories) using libtiff and displays the first image within 90 seconds. Not bad!
