The crux of the problem illustrated in the above-mentioned bug report appears to be the inability of libtiff/tif_dirinfo.c _TIFFMergeFieldInfo to actually merge two arrays containing identical tags. I changed the error message there to read:

This sounds like a problem I had with libtiff4 and fixed there. I'll dig into the bug report and the 3.9 branch and see if a similar fix would be appropriate.
