I've asked about claiming an "unused" github account before, and it could well be that there's a lot of hidden usage in private repos which you can't see. But if anyone else wanted to attempt to contact them, you might have better luck than me.

The project's name is actually "TIFF" (libtiff is a component of the project) and Adobe holds the trademark to that name. Since Adobe has expressed a desire to help, then Adobe could help negotiate with Github on our behalf to acquire the name.
