Does anyone know how to get xv to rotate files as a filter on the command line without using a graphics x session? I can't seem to follow what I thought would be a straight foward way to do this.

Do you know of any faster utility than xv for doing this?

XV's doesn't do command-line-based image conversion, nor is it likely to do so in the future. I heartily recommend the 'pbmplus' (or 'netpbm') distributions for all your command-line image manipulation needs. You can get them from ftp.x.org, in the R5contrib directory, or thereabouts.
