Ive googled for resources and found libtiff material

The first page to read is http://www.remotesensing.org/libtiff/libtiff.html.

Another great resource is the LibTiff man pages index, http://www.remotesensing.org/libtiff/man/index.html.

The next best resource is probably the mailing list archive over at http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/tml.html. It includes a 'local google' search function. Include 'andrey' as part of your search query, and you'll find lots of useful code snippets.

But almost all the files Ive used as test case returned invalid format

> or fields warning

If by 'invalid fields warning' you mean the typical 'unknown field with tag xxx encountered', then you can safely ignore these. They are not errors, and unknown fields should not have any influence on interchangable image rendering, but should merely carry additional data useful only to those that know about these fields. See also http://www.asmail.be/msg0054883528.html for a recent thread on that subject.
