I had no problem compiling and installing libtiff 3.7.1, but I find it odd that I now have:

 -rw-r--r--   1 root sys   375670 Jan 14 13:12 /usr/local/lib/libtiff.a
 -rwxr-xr-x   1 root sys      847 Jan 14 13:12 /usr/local/lib/libtiff.la
 -rwxr-xr-x   1 root sys   443852 Jan 14 13:12 /usr/local/lib/libtiff.so@
 -rwxr-xr-x   1 root sys   443852 Jan 14 13:12 /usr/local/lib/libtiff.so.10.7.1
 -rwxr-xr-x   1 root sys   443852 Jan 14 13:12 /usr/local/lib/libtiff.so.3@

Whence that "10.7.1"? I do see that all the Makefiles contain:

 LIBTIFF_MAJOR_VERSION = 3
 LIBTIFF_MICRO_VERSION = 1
 LIBTIFF_MINOR_VERSION = 7

This is very strange anomaly. As Jay said the libtool mechanics does not used in libtiff yet, so your binaries should have version number 3.7.1. What is your system? Have you tried a version from CVS?
