I just found this also... downloaded 4.4.0, and got this oddness:

-- Building tiff version 4.5.0
-- libtiff library version 6.0.0

Should this not be more like:

Building TIFF version 6.0
libtiff library version 4.4.0

It's pretty much exactly backwards! Also, building on Windows with VS 2022, massive numbers of typecast warnings to smaller types
