I'm not sure we can guarantee 8 byte alignment of the IFD, so how can we guarantee that the items will be aligned in memory?

Sure, but, perhaps alignment should be seen as build into the specification in order to ensure that 95% of the files written are aligned, whilst implementations should still be able to deal with unaligned data.

If I'm not mistaking, on most processors there is a gain from aligning of data, whilst things still work if data is not aligned. Thus, it pays to build alignment into the specification design, whilst implementation would normally not have any trouble dealing with misaligned files (except that they'll be a bit slower doing so and only gain full speed benefits when data is aligned).

Or am I missing something.?
