libtiff itself can read tiled images. TIFFRGBA interface (coded in tif_getimage.c file) shows how to work with tiles. Unfortunately it is not a trivial code, it covers many variants of bit depths, planar configurations, orientations etc. In despite of this it works correctly :-)

yeah, but then you have to go tell LibTiff to read it, and make sure that code is right, etc.... it's much easier to double click the filename and let the default viewer try to handle it. alas..

lesson learned: don't assume your favorite file viewer knows how to handle exotic TIFF flavors.
