Thank you Frank, Malcolm, Rob, Kiriakos, Bob and Wolfgang:

The "-lm" flag was missing, so the math library wasn't linked. According to Frank Warmerdam, this was due to a bug in the configure script for 3.5.7 beta (fixed in the final release, now available).
