Joris,
Although I "tend" to agree with you, may I simply mention that:
- libtiff is NOT in charge of the tiff specs
- the iptc tag is NOT part of the TIFF specs. It's a private tag that happens to be well known.
- therefore it's really difficult to state whether the type for that tag should follow the TIFF specs, or the current reference implementation, even if the latter is bogus regarding the TIFF specs
- as I already mentioned, the present and future are ruled by XMP, not by IPTC, so keeping with a legacy bug to handle legacy data isn't much of a problem, because the chances that Adobe will correct the bug in PS are simply null.
