that was what i did first, but, as you say, our viewer ignores that.

Is another viewer an option?

So we need to rotate the image itself. Do you know of any solution?

What are your needs?
a tool for just one image?
a hotfolder based tool?

googling on tiff rotate tool gives enough hits e.g.
