So it seems we have at least two people agree on the fact that greyscale is R=G=B, assuming RGB is sRGB, is the common practice, though it seems to violate a small remark in the spec, and that people would generally speaking do well to follow this common practice.
So, that's option 1) in my original post...

I concur from a "common usage" point of view. I must admit that this color theory stuff about gamma values and so forth is all greek to me.
