Yes, it is clearly much better. An even more general solution which can be used for the several other utilities supporting similar options would be even better. :-)

Yes, but tiffcp is by far the most significant case. And perhaps one of the most used of the tools. I may not be impartial on this, though :-) because I use it heavily.

The issue occurs mainly with lzma2, zstd, and webp, which are not commonly accepted compression formats for tiff files. The other tools refer mainly to lzw, zip, packbits, and jpeg, which are pretty standard and usually built with libtiff "by default". So, tiffcp was in fact the most "boring" case.
